The 1999 Base Set: A Collector's Guide to Where It All Began

From the holographic Charizard to shadowless prints and 1st Edition stamps, here is everything that makes the 1999 Base Set the cornerstone of Pokémon collecting.

No set carries more weight in the hobby than the 1999 Base Set. It introduced Pokémon to the trading-card world in English and remains the most iconic, valuable, and chased release of all time.

The print variations that matter

Base Set is famous for its print runs, and the differences directly affect value:

  • 1st Edition — marked with a small "1st Edition" stamp, these came from the earliest print run and are the most valuable.
  • Shadowless — printed after 1st Edition but before the standard run, these lack the drop shadow on the right side of the artwork box.
  • Unlimited — the standard, most common run, with the shadow present.

Learning to tell these apart is the first skill every vintage collector develops.

The chase cards

The set's holographic rares are the headliners, led by the legendary Charizard. Blastoise and Venusaur round out the starter trio, and cards like Chansey, Gyarados, and Zapdos are beloved as well. A 1st Edition holo Charizard in a high grade is one of the most recognizable trophies in the entire hobby.

Why condition is brutal here

Base Set cards are decades old and were cut on equipment that produced frequent centering issues. Holo cards are prone to surface scratching and edge whitening. As a result, high grades are genuinely rare, which is exactly why they command such premiums.

What to watch for

  • Centering, especially on the back.
  • Holo scratches that only appear at an angle.
  • Edge whitening on the dark holo borders.
  • Authenticity — Base Set is heavily counterfeited.

Pre-grade your vintage finds

Because top grades are so scarce and valuable in Base Set, pre-grading is essential. Scan your 1999 cards in Cardemon to estimate centering, surface, and overall grade before you commit to an official submission. It is the smartest way to handle the most important set in the hobby.
