Graded Card Premiums: When a Slab Is Worth the Extra Money
Sometimes a PSA 10 premium is huge; sometimes it is tiny. Learn how to evaluate whether paying for a grade makes sense.
Collectors talk about "the premium" as if it were fixed. It is not. A grade premium is a living spread between raw and graded prices for a specific card.
How to measure the premium
Compare recent raw NM sold prices to recent PSA 9 / PSA 10 sold prices of the same card. Subtract fees and typical grading costs if you are deciding whether to submit rather than buy graded.
When premiums are wide
- Strong demand + low gem population
- Vintage icons in top condition
- Cards that are hard to find clean
When premiums are narrow
- Modern cards with huge PSA 10 populations
- Low-demand cards nobody searches for
- Cases where raw NM already looks perfect and buyers will not pay for plastic
Buying graded vs grading yourself
Buying a slab transfers risk to the market price. Grading yourself can capture premium but adds time, fees, and grade outcome risk.
Estimate before you chase premiums
If you hold raw, Cardemon helps you guess whether you are hunting a wide premium or paying fees for a narrow one.
Premium decay
As more gems are graded, premiums can compress. Recheck the spread; do not rely on a YouTube video from two years ago.
Eye appeal exceptions
Sometimes a raw card with perfect look sells closer to graded prices because buyers plan to submit it themselves. That is still not a reason to overpay without a scan.
Scan the card, compare the estimate to live graded comps, and only chase slabs when the spread justifies it.
Practical money habits that protect you
Write a max buy price before you shop, verify sold comps for the exact variant and condition, and treat fees as part of the price. Hype is loud; net proceeds are quiet. When condition decides the spread — and it often does — scan the card in Cardemon before you stretch for a "deal" that is only a deal if it gems.
