How AI Grades Pokémon Cards: A Plain-English Guide

Grading used to mean mailing your cards to a company, paying a fee, and waiting weeks or months for a number to come back. AI grading flips that on its head: point your phone at a card and get an estimate in seconds. But what is actually happening behind the scenes?

The four factors every grade is built on

Professional graders and AI systems alike look at the same core attributes:

• Centering — how evenly the artwork is framed inside the borders, front and back.
• Corners — whether the four corners are sharp or show fraying and whitening.
• Edges — the condition of the card's outer borders, where chipping loves to hide.
• Surface — scratches, print lines, dents, and holo scuffing across the card face.

A final 1–10 grade is essentially a weighted summary of these four sub-grades. A single weak area, like off-center artwork, can cap an otherwise flawless card.

How computer vision "sees" a card

When you scan the front and back, the AI first locates the card in the frame and corrects for angle and lighting. It then measures border widths to calculate centering as a ratio, inspects each corner region at high magnification, traces the edges for interruptions, and scans the surface for irregular reflections that indicate scratches or print defects.

Because the model has learned from many examples of cards at every condition level, it can map those measurements onto a grade scale that mirrors how human graders think.

Why front-and-back scanning matters
