How to Store Pokémon Cards So They Stay Mint

The fastest way to lose money in this hobby is poor storage. Cards that were mint when you got them can degrade in months if stored badly. Here is how to keep them in top condition.

The enemies of cardstock

Four things quietly damage cards over time:

• Humidity — causes warping and surface clouding.
• Light — fades artwork and foil, especially direct sunlight.
• Heat — warps cards and can cause sticking.
• Handling — fingerprints, corner dings, and bends from frequent contact.

Control these four and your cards will stay sharp.

The layered protection approach

For valuable raw cards, use a layered system:

1. Penny sleeve — a soft inner sleeve against the card.
2. Toploader or one-touch — a rigid holder to prevent bending.
3. Storage box — a sturdy box to keep holders organized and shielded from light.

For bulk cards, sleeved rows in a solid card box work well.

Climate and placement

Store cards in a cool, dry, stable environment. Avoid attics, basements, garages, and exterior walls where temperature and humidity swing. A closet in a climate-controlled room is ideal. Consider silica gel packs to control moisture in your boxes.

Graded cards

Slabs protect the card itself, but the labels and cases can still scuff. Keep slabs out of direct sunlight and store them upright or in dedicated slab boxes to avoid scratching the cases.

Catalog as you store
