Sleeves, Toploaders, and Cases: A Protection Guide for Every Card

Penny sleeves, toploaders, one-touch holders, and more — learn which protection to use for each card based on its value and how you handle it.

Card protection comes in many forms, and using the right one for each card prevents the slow damage that erodes value. Here is a guide to matching protection to the card.

Penny sleeves

The basic building block. Thin, soft sleeves that guard against scratches and fingerprints. Use them on virtually everything, and as the inner layer for valuable cards. Insert cards carefully to avoid corner dings.

Perfect fit / inner sleeves

Snug sleeves that fit a card precisely, often used inside a penny sleeve for double protection on valuable cards. The "penny sleeve plus perfect fit" combo is a collector staple.

Toploaders

Rigid plastic holders that prevent bending. Ideal for single valuable cards, shipping, and short-term display. Always sleeve a card before putting it in a toploader so it does not rub against the hard plastic.

One-touch magnetic holders

Premium rigid cases with a magnetic closure and often UV protection. Perfect for displaying your best raw cards safely. They look great and offer strong protection, though they cost more.

Card savers

Semi-rigid holders favored for submitting cards to grading companies because they are gentle on corners and easy to insert and remove.

Storage boxes and deck boxes

For bulk and sleeved cards, sturdy boxes keep everything organized and shielded from light and dust.

Match protection to value

A simple rule of thumb:

  • Bulk cards: penny sleeve and a box.
  • Better cards: penny sleeve plus toploader.
  • Valuable display cards: sleeve plus one-touch holder.
  • Grading submissions: card saver.
