Factory Defects vs Wear: What Graders Penalize Differently

Not every flaw is damage. Learn the difference between factory defects and post-pack wear — and how that distinction shows up in grades and value.

The Cardemon Team2 min read

Collectors often lump every imperfection into "damage." Graders draw a finer line between what the factory did and what happened after the pack was opened — and you should too.

Factory-side issues

Common manufacturing flaws include:

  • Print lines and roller marks.
  • Ink spots or registration issues.
  • Rough or uneven factory cuts.
  • Crimped edges from pack sealing (on some eras).

These can still lower a grade because the grade describes the card you have, not the card's life story. Origin does not always equal a free pass.

Wear from handling

Wear includes corner whitening, edge chipping, surface scratches from sleeves or binders, and bends. This is the damage collectors can usually prevent with better storage.

Why the distinction still matters

For buying and selling, buyers care about eye appeal and grade more than philosophy. For your own collecting, knowing what is "pack fresh but imperfect" versus "played hard" helps you set expectations and prices.

Error cards are a special case

True errors (miscuts, wrong backs, major print anomalies) sometimes become collectible in their own right. That is different from a minor print line that simply hurts surface. Know which bucket you are in before paying an "error premium."

Inspect with a system

Check centering, corners, edges, and surface under consistent light. Or scan both sides in Cardemon for a structured read — the fastest way to separate "looks fine in hand" from "will struggle in a gem case."

A quick pre-submission checklist

Before you spend on grading, confirm four things: the exact card and variant, recent comps for the grade you hope to hit, front-and-back condition under good light, and whether the fee still leaves upside. If any answer is fuzzy, slow down. Cardemon is built to sharpen the condition answer in minutes so the money questions get clearer.
