1st Edition vs Unlimited: Why the Stamp Changes Everything

On vintage Pokémon cards, one tiny detail can multiply the value: the 1st Edition stamp. Knowing the difference between 1st Edition and Unlimited prints is essential for any collector handling older cards.

What the stamp means

When a set first launched, the earliest print run carried a small "1st Edition" stamp — usually a circular emblem on the left side of the card. Once that initial run sold out, the set was reprinted without the stamp as the Unlimited edition.

Because the 1st Edition run was smaller and came first, those cards are rarer and more desirable.

How big is the difference

For desirable vintage cards, 1st Edition copies can be worth many times their Unlimited counterparts, especially in high grades. The 1st Edition holo Charizard is the famous example, but the premium applies across vintage sets.

Do not confuse it with shadowless

In Base Set there is a third category to know:

• 1st Edition — has the stamp.
• Shadowless — no stamp, but missing the drop shadow on the artwork box (an early Unlimited print).
• Unlimited — no stamp, with the shadow present.

Shadowless cards sit between 1st Edition and Unlimited in value.

How to tell them apart

Look for the stamp on the left side of the artwork. For Base Set, also check whether the artwork box has a drop shadow on its right and bottom edges. These small details determine which category — and price tier — a card belongs to.
