How to Read a PSA Label: Cert Number, Grade, and What It Means

A PSA slab is only as trustworthy as the label on the front. Knowing how to read that label — and verify it — is a basic skill every Pokémon collector needs before buying graded cards.

What appears on a PSA label

A modern PSA label typically includes:

• Card name and set — the identification PSA assigned after authenticating the card.
• Grade — a whole number from 1 to 10 (or Authentic, or qualifiers like OC).
• Certification number — a unique ID you can look up in PSA's online population report.
• Card number / variant details — set number and sometimes edition notes.

Older labels vary slightly in layout, but the cert number and grade are always the anchors.

Why the cert number matters

The certification number lets you confirm the slab matches a real PSA entry. Look it up on PSA's website: the card description, grade, and photos (when available) should match what you are holding. A mismatch is a red flag for a counterfeit or tampered slab.

Qualifiers you should understand

Some labels carry extra marks:

• OC (Off-Center) — centering was too far off for the assigned grade without a qualifier.
• PD / ST / other marks — less common notes about print defects or other issues.

A qualifier can meaningfully affect resale compared to a clean grade of the same number.

Grade vs. market grade

A PSA 9 and a PSA 10 of the same card can differ wildly in price. Read the grade carefully, then cross-check recent comps for that exact grade — not just "graded Charizard" in general.

Verify before you buy

When shopping graded cards, check the cert, inspect the slab for tampering, and compare the card inside to known authentic copies. For raw cards you already own, estimate the grade first with Cardemon so you know whether a PSA submission is worth the fee.
