Are Your Kid's Old Pokémon Cards Worth Grading?
Found a childhood binder? Learn how to triage played cards, spot the few worth grading, and avoid spending grading fees on commons.
Parents and newly nostalgic adults ask this constantly: the binder from 1999 or 2016 is out of the closet — what now? Most cards should not be graded. A few might deserve a closer look.
Start with identification, not grading
Before thinking about PSA, figure out what the cards are. Set symbols, card numbers, Pokémon names, and whether something is holo, reverse holo, or promo all matter. A "Charizard" could be a dollar common or a major card depending on the set.
Triage by condition honestly
Childhood cards are often shuffled, bent, or stored in rubber-banded stacks. Grading fees on heavily whitened cards rarely make sense. Keep the fun cards for display and focus money on pieces that still look sharp.
Triage by demand
Even in nice shape, most commons and uncommons are not grading candidates. Prioritize:
- Popular Pokémon (Charizard, Pikachu, Eeveelutions, etc.).
- Rare holos, full arts, secret rares, and known chase cards.
- Vintage WOTC when condition allows.
A simple decision rule
Grade only if a realistic high grade would meaningfully exceed raw value plus fees and time. If you cannot make that case, sleeve it and enjoy it.
Scan the promising ones
Pull the best-looking candidates and scan them in Cardemon. You will get an identity check, a condition estimate, and a value range — enough to decide which childhood hits deserve a submission and which belong in a binder with a story.
A quick pre-submission checklist
Before you spend on grading, confirm four things: the exact card and variant, recent comps for the grade you hope to hit, front-and-back condition under good light, and whether the fee still leaves upside. If any answer is fuzzy, slow down. Cardemon is built to sharpen the condition answer in minutes so the money questions get clearer.
