PSA vs BGS vs SGC: Which Grading Company Is Right for You?

If you decide a card is worth official grading, the next question is who should grade it. The three biggest names — PSA, BGS, and SGC — each have strengths. Here is how to choose.

PSA

PSA is the most recognized name in trading cards and usually commands the strongest resale value, especially for Pokémon. A PSA 10 is the benchmark the market quotes most often.

• Best for: maximum liquidity and resale value.
• Sub-grades: not shown on the standard label.
• Reputation: the default choice for most Pokémon collectors.

BGS (Beckett)

BGS is known for detailed sub-grades printed right on the slab, and for the coveted Black Label — a card that scores a perfect 10 across all four sub-grades.

• Best for: collectors who want transparency on centering, corners, edges, and surface.
• Sub-grades: displayed on the label.
• Reputation: strong, with the Black Label as a chase for perfection.

SGC

SGC has a loyal following thanks to its clean, tuxedo-style black slab and consistent grading. Turnaround is often competitive.

• Best for: vintage cards and collectors who love the slab aesthetic.
• Sub-grades: not standard on the label.

How to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

1. Are you selling? PSA usually maximizes resale for Pokémon.
2. Do you want sub-grades visible? BGS shows them on the label.
3. Do you prefer a particular slab look or faster turnaround? SGC and others may fit better.

Grade smarter before you submit
