Grading 101

Should You Grade Your Pokémon Cards? A Simple Decision Framework

Not every card is worth grading. Use this framework — value, condition, and cost — to decide which cards to submit and which to keep raw.

Grading can multiply a card's value — or cost you more than the card is worth. The trick is knowing which cards deserve a slab. Here is a framework you can apply to any card in your binder.

Step 1: Estimate the raw value

Start with what the card is worth ungraded. Grading fees plus shipping only make sense if the card is valuable enough that a high grade meaningfully increases its price. A common card worth a couple dollars rarely justifies a fee.

Step 2: Estimate the condition

A card only benefits from grading if it will come back in a high grade. Submitting a card that grades a 7 usually destroys the math — you pay the fee and the graded card is worth less than you hoped. This is where a pre-grade is essential.

Step 3: Compare graded prices

Look at recent sales of the same card in PSA 9 and PSA 10. Subtract the grading and shipping cost. If the expected graded value comfortably exceeds the raw value plus fees, grading makes sense.

A quick mental model:

  • High value + likely 9 or 10: grade it.
  • High value + likely 7 or 8: usually keep raw or sell as-is.
  • Low value + any grade: keep raw unless it is sentimental.

Step 4: Consider why you collect

Sometimes the answer is not financial. Grading protects a card and looks fantastic in a display. If a card means something to you, a slab can be worth it regardless of the spread.

Make the call faster

The hardest part of this framework is steps 1 and 2 — value and condition. Cardemon handles both: scan a card to get a value range and a grade estimate, then decide with real numbers instead of guesses. Run your shortlist through the app before you fill out a submission form.
