A holo can look perfect straight-on and still be covered in hairline scratches. Foil reflects light in ways that reveal micro-wear non-holos hide — which is why surface separates so many 9s from 10s.

How to find scratches

Hold the card under a single light and tilt it slowly on both axes. Scratches flash as bright lines across the holo pattern. Check the face and any textured or special foil areas that modern sets use.

Common causes

• Sliding cards into cheap soft sleeves.
• Binder pages with abrasive textures.
• Stacking unsleeved holos.
• Wiping a card with a dry tissue or shirt.

Prevention tips
