Corners, Edges, and Surface: The Other Three Grading Factors

Centering may be the most talked-about grading factor, but corners, edges, and surface quietly decide the fate of just as many cards. Here is what each one means and how to inspect it.

Corners

Corners are the most fragile part of any card. Even light handling can soften a sharp point or introduce whitening, where the white core of the card shows through the printed layer.

What lowers a corner sub-grade:

• Visible whitening or fraying at the tip.
• A rounded or "soft" corner that has lost its crisp point.
• Dings from being dropped or shuffled.

Inspect all eight corners — four on the front, four on the back — under angled light.

Edges

Edges run along the outer border of the card and are especially vulnerable on holo and foil cards, where the foil layer can chip. Look for:

• Nicks and small chips along the border.
• Whitening that runs in a line down an edge.
• Rough or feathered cuts from the original manufacturing.

Dark-bordered cards make edge wear extremely obvious, which is why so many of them are hard to grade highly.

Surface

Surface covers the entire face of the card. This is where the trickiest defects live because many only appear under the right light:

• Scratches and hairlines, common on holo foil.
• Print lines and printing defects from the factory.
• Indentations, scuffs, and clouding.
• Holo scratching that interrupts the shine.

Tilt the card slowly under a light source to catch reflections that reveal scratches you cannot see straight on.
