Half Grades Explained: What a 9.5 Really Means

Some companies issue half grades like 9.5 and Black Labels. Here is what they mean, who uses them, and how they affect value.

If you have browsed graded Pokémon cards, you have probably seen grades like 9.5 alongside the familiar 9 and 10. Half grades add nuance to the scale — and a little confusion. Here is what they mean.

Where half grades come from

Not every grading company uses the same scale. Some, like BGS, issue half-point grades such as 8.5 and 9.5 to capture cards that sit between two whole grades. Others, like PSA, primarily use whole numbers at the top of the scale.

A 9.5 is exactly what it sounds like: better than a 9, just short of a perfect 10. It usually means three of the four sub-grades are excellent and one holds the card back from a true gem.

The Black Label

BGS also awards a special Black Label to cards that earn a perfect 10 in all four sub-grades simultaneously — centering, corners, edges, and surface. It is the toughest designation in the hobby and carries a major premium because so few cards qualify.

How half grades affect value

Half grades let the market price condition more precisely. A 9.5 typically sells above a 9 but below a 10. For collectors, this can be an opportunity: a 9.5 often looks indistinguishable from a 10 to the naked eye while costing less.

Reading sub-grades

When a company prints sub-grades on the slab, you can see exactly why a card landed where it did. A 9.5 with a 9 in centering and 10s elsewhere tells a clear story — the borders held it back.

Estimate sub-grades before you submit

Cardemon reports the same four sub-grades that drive half grades and Black Labels. Scan a card and you will see whether it is a clean candidate across all four factors, or whether one weak area will keep it out of the top tier. That insight helps you choose the right company and set realistic expectations.
